Yuri’s Night Cocoa Beach 2008
YN08 Cocoa Beach is made possible through the volunteer efforts of the NSS Florida Space Coast chapter and the SEDS chapter at the University of Central Florida. These groups have had smaller individual Yuri’s Night events in Florida over the last few years. They combined efforts in 2008 to create a larger public outreach event.
If you are interested in helping to organize our 2008 event here along the Space Coast, please email Chris Reeves at cocoabeach (at) YurisNight.net for information. We also have informal meet-ups on Monday nights at the Cocoa Beach Pier from 6-7pm.
Yuri’s Night, the World Space Party
Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space on April 12th, 1961. The US Space Shuttle first launched on April 12th, 1981. Yuri’s Night is like the St Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo for space. It is one day when all the world can come together and celebrate the power and beauty of space and what it means for each of us.
Yuri’s Night was created by space enthusiasts that wanted to join the world of art, music, dance, and exploration in a fun, party atmosphere. The event was initially intended to be local, but it exploded into a grassroots global celebration with tens of thousands of people participating in over 100 events worldwide.
Each Yuri’s Night event is locally organized and funded, giving each party a special ‘flavor’ that is always different! From all-night dance parties in LA to planetarium shows at the Hayden Planetarium in New York, down to our own 2008 Space Beach Party here in Florida!
